The Park Maintenance Worker-II serves as a Lead employee in each work crew that is assigned to a Park Maintenance Supervisor. This Lead directs, guides, trains, and develops crew members, whether or not a Supervisor is present, while also performing all aspects of Park or Facility maintenance. Workers, either permanent staff or temporary, may be assigned to a Lead on an as-needed basis depending on the size or complexity of tasks necessary to maintain an assigned park area. However, a Park Maintenance Worker-II may be assigned individual responsibility for Park or Facility area without being Leader or part of a crew.

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: Public pesticide applicator's license.Knowledge: Parks and recreation principles and practices related to landscaping and turf management. Working knowledge of the methods, equipment, and materials used in the care and maintenance of parks and recreation centers. Working knowledge of plants, their diseases, and methods of control. General knowledge of carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and other building trades. Working knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions involved in equipment operation and park maintenance and development.
Skills: The operation of tools and equipment typical in parks, facilities and play component, installation and maintenance. Learn to operate, maintain and repair power tools and equipment used in the work place. Learn how to maintain turf, trees, shrubs, and other planting materials. Perform basic mathematical operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and determine weight measurement, volume and distance. Effectively deal with standardized situations. Read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence and / or memos and irrigation manuals, training guides, standard operating procedures and MSDS manuals. Write simple correspondence, reports and work logs. Communicate effectively. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, members of the public and public officials. Works primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, explosives, chemicals, fumes, odors, gases, dusts and poor ventilation is prevalent. Safety equipment and clothing (gloves, vests, back brace, steel-toe boots, glasses, ear plugs) are required and provided.

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with other department supervisors and managers on routine assignments and special projects. External: Works with contractors and the general public on parks maintenance issues and resolves complaints. Works with parks workers and department supervisors to construct and repair parks and facilities on time and within costs. - Issues written and oral instructions to assigned Workers on work product, priorities, timelines, and task specifications.
- Assists Supervisor in planning and directing the irrigating, mowing, and fertilizing of the parks and City property.
- Helps Supervisor determine work procedures and expedites workflow.
- Checks parks for safety concerns and repairs when possible and reports concerns to supervisor.
- Helps Supervisor coordinate all operations of the facilities and sports complexes.
- Prepares soil; plants; waters; mows; fertilizes; removes weeds; cultivates grass, trees, and other plants; controls fungi, weeds, insects and rodents; prunes; and removes litter.
- Assists Supervisor in planning and directing the operation of tree, sod and turf nurseries necessary for the replacement and reconstruction of municipal parks.
- Visually inspects park facilities and equipment for damage and vandalism; estimates cost of damage; completes vandalism reports.
- Maintains, adjusts and operates specialized turf care equipment and tools.
- Installs and/or maintains play structures and skate park components in accordance with playground design and safety requirements.
- Checks and repairs/replaces valves, sprinkler heads and pipes. Winterizes irrigation systems.
- Installs and maintains trails, complying with accessibility requirements.
- Performs minor semi-skilled park building maintenance to include painting, fence repair, graffiti removal and park building improvements.
- Trenches and installs new pipelines
- Leads, guides, develops, assists, and trains assigned work crews.
- Preps athletic fields for practice and regular games.
- Operates boom truck to include but not limited to, street banners, shade structures, parking lot lights, three trimming, surveillance cameras and flags.
- Assists with traffic control for City events (parades) putting up and taking down barricades.
- Supervises Community Service Workers from any courthouse.
- Assists in the setup and breakdown of City special events.
- Maintains open space and Bosque areas including restoration.
- Removes snow/ice during inclement weather at City facilities and parking lots/sidewalks including off hours.
- Installs high tensile fencing.
- Assists in set up and tear down of ribbon cuttings and ground breakings.
- Constructs and installs memorial tree plaque and tree.
- Maintains City skate parks and dog parks.
- Maintains culverts/drainage ditches within City park limits.
