CNC Machinist (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Shift) Job Description This role involves setting up, programming, and operating both manual and CNC machining equipment, including 3-axis and 5-axis mills, to produce high-precision components with tight tolerances and high-quality finishes for a wide range of industries. You will work with advanced machinery, multiple control systems, and complex blueprints to deliver accurate parts while maintaining strict quality and safety standards. Responsibilities Set up CNC machines using edge finders, indicators, and appropriate methods to ensure accurate alignment and proper workholding. Qualify first-piece production through detailed inspections, making necessary adjustments to achieve close and exacting tolerances and high-quality aesthetics. Operate and monitor CNC machines, including the ability to run multiple machines at a time to maintain efficient production. Perform machining operations using both manual and CNC machines to produce precision components. Work with a variety of equipment such as 3-axis mills (including Fadal, Okuma, Makino, Mazak) and 5-axis mills (including Hurco and Mikron). Use various controller types including Heidenhain, Fanuc, Okuma, Hurco, Makino Pro 5 and Pro 6, and Fadal to run and adjust machining programs. Collect data from blueprints, plans, work orders, and other sources to complete inspection sheets and support quality documentation. Enter and adjust instructions in CNC equipment based on programming requirements and production needs. Set up CNC equipment with the correct attachments, fixtures, and tooling to perform specific jobs. Troubleshoot issues related to machine programming, tooling, and setup to resolve production problems and maintain part quality. Inspect parts and maintain equipment as part of preventive maintenance (PMP) duties to ensure consistent performance and reliability. Follow safety procedures and regulations at all times to maintain a safe working environment. Collaborate closely with engineers, leadership, and other team members to resolve technical issues and improve processes. Use inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, and gage pins to verify part dimensions and tolerances. Apply knowledge of different tooling types, including end mills, bullnose cutters, ballnose cutters, chamfer mills, drills, and other cutting tools to select the proper tooling for each job. Interpret and apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and G and M codes in daily machining operations. Maintain accurate records of production, inspections, and any adjustments made during the machining process. Demonstrate strong attention to detail and effective listening skills to ensure parts meet specifications and customer requirements. Essential Skills 3-10 years of CNC machining experience. Strong knowledge and experience in 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings accurately. Ability to set up your own machine, including fixturing, tooling, and program loading. Ability to inspect parts using precision measuring instruments and verify dimensions against specifications. Proficiency with Mastercam and CAD/CAM software for CNC programming and toolpath generation. Working knowledge of G and M codes for CNC programming and machine operation. Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and its application in machining. Experience working with CNC controllers such as Heidenhain, Fanuc, Okuma, Hurco, Makino Pro 5 and Pro 6, and Fadal. Hands-on experience operating 3-axis mills (e.g., Fadal, Okuma, Makino, Mazak) and 5-axis mills (e.g., Hurco, Mikron). Ability to collect and record data from blueprints, plans, and work orders to complete inspection sheets. Understanding of ISO 9001 quality systems (knowledge preferred). Familiarity with CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) operations or concepts. Proficiency with precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, and gage pins. Familiarity with various cutting tools including end mills, bullnose cutters, ballnose cutters, chamfer mills, and drills. Solid understanding of the decimal system and basic shop math.
