Orange County Utilities provides water resources and solid waste recovery services to protect and enrich the lives of the citizens and guests of Orange County Florida. The Water Division ensures a safe and reliable water supply for all of Orange County Utilities customers. The Water Division operates four regional water supply facilities and nine satellite water supply facilities that collectively produce over 60 million gallons per day.
The Water Divisionis seeking a highly qualified Industrial Mechanic Trainee, I, or II. This position will be responsible for: troubleshooting and repairs to heavy industrial, water processing equipment, replacement of bearings, aligning of motors and pumps to minimize vibration and stresses, replacement of seals, bushings, and other mechanical parts. This position will also be responsible for rebuilds and pump repairs, performs preventative and predictive maintenance on all pumps, motors, and mechanical process equipment. Performs as a lead mechanic, organizing and supervising major overhauls and repairs projects. Plans jobs and assigns duties as needed.
Job Description
General Functions
Performs mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on pumping systems, blowers, gearboxes and mechanical drive systems, in a major industrial plant environment or the water and wastewater field with multiple critical processes. Leads and oversees complex repair and maintenance projects.
Work is performed with considerable independence under a Manager. Performance is reviewed through observations and results achieved.
Representative Duties/Assignments
Industrial Mechanic Trainee
- Performs minor repairs as well as preventative maintenance on pumps, valves, seals and motors.
- Assists other trades in performing major overhauls of pumps and motors. Repairs PVC pipes and fittings.
- Assists in maintaining chemical delivery systems including gauges, and pressure relief equipment. Rebuilds regulators, replacing gaskets and mechanical parts as needed.
- Assists in removing restrictions and cleaning piping systems in major processes throughout the plant and system.
- Assists in replacing drive belts, filters, grease and lubricate all equipment on a routine PM program.
- Assists in performing preventative maintenance to water and or wastewater pumping stations.
- Assists in installing pumps, valves, and associated piping, removing and cleaning pumps, checking valves, troubleshooting equipment failures and confined space entry.
- Assists in performing preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and various types of equipment.
- Assists in operating various types of tools and equipment to facilitate maintenance and repairs.
- Assists in supporting field staff in the operation of water and/or wastewater transmission, collections and pumping systems.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
Industrial Mechanic I
- Performs minor repairs as well as preventative maintenance on pumps. Assists other trades in performing major overhauls of pumps and motors. Repair PVC pipes and fittings.
- Maintains chlorine delivery systems including vacuum systems, gauges, and pressure relief equipment. Rebuilds regulators replacing gaskets and mechanical parts as needed.
- Removes restrictions and clean piping systems in major processes throughout the plant and system.
- Replaces drive belts, filters, grease and lubricate all equipment on a routine PM program.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Industrial Mechanic II
- Routinely rebuilds and repair pumps. Performs preventative and predictive maintenance on all pumps, motors and mechanical process equipment. Welds and rebuild surfaces to repair damaged equipment. Performs as a lead mechanic, organizing and supervising major overhauls and repairs projects. Plans jobs and assigns duties as needed.
- Uses technical manuals and drawings to repair equipment as needed.
- Maintains and repairs chlorine delivery systems including vacuum systems, gauges, and pressure relief equipment. Rebuilds regulators replacing gaskets and mechanical parts as needed.
- Trains staff in the repair and maintenance of the processing equipment related to the field.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Industrial Mechanic TraineeMinimum Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent or completion of a certified mechanical (or related) program.
(No prior work experience is required.
Industrial Mechanic I Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in extensive automotive or mechanical repairs to include experience in disassembly and repair of pumps.
Or
Completion of a certified mechanical (or related) program and (2) years of experience in extensive automotive or mechanical repairs to include experience in disassembly and repair of pumps
Or
An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
Possess Lockout/Tagout certification or obtain within six (6) months of hire or promotion.
Possess a Forklift certification or obtain within six (6) months of hire or promotion.
Possess a Defensive Driving certification or obtain within six (6) months of hire or promotion.
Possess and maintain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification or obtain within six (6) months of hire or promotion.
Depending on area of assignment, some divisions may require a Class B CDL with required endorsements within six (6) months of hire or promotion.

Preferences
Industrial Mechanic Trainee
- Experience in mechanical system and knowledge of related trades.
- Operational experience with machine shop equipment, portable electric and pneumatic tools.
- Experience using portable pumps and generators.
- Experience in conducting repairs according to technical manuals and drawings.
- Experience in extensive automotive or mechanical repairs to include disassembly and repair of pumps.
Industrial Mechanic I/II
- Experience in water and wastewater operations and processes and knowledge of related trades.
- Knowledge and skills in maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic systems needed to undertake the various repair tasks.
- Familiar with the rules governing safe crane operation or possession of safe crane certification.
- Heavy equipment and forklift operating skills.

Schedule: Monday Friday / 7:00 am 3:30 pm, on-call duty as assigned and SCADA desk 24 hour shift coverage.
