Job Overview:

The R&D Lab Technician will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and conducting experiments that encompass chemical, physical, electrical, and mechanical tests to support TRI Austins research and development initiatives. The role involves analyzing, interpreting, evaluating, and reporting test data, as well as assisting in method development, problem-solving, data evaluation, and technical report writing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute materials characterization through chemical, physical, electrical, and mechanical testing, adhering to established procedures.
  • Review and interpret work instructions and customer specifications related to mechanical testing and ASTM methods.
  • Conduct various tests on non-metallic materials, including tensile, compression, shear, peel, flexural, and sandwich testing.
  • Perform dimensional measurements, apply strain gauges, and conduct moisture conditioning.
  • Operate MTS and Instron test frames (universal testing machines), computers, and other testing equipment.
  • Utilize shop tools such as routers, grinders, drills, and milling machines; experience with CNC milling and water jet cutting is advantageous.
  • Conduct data analysis and perform basic mathematical functions using Microsoft Excel.
  • Use scales, micrometers, and calipers accurately.
  • Maintain detailed records of all testing activities while ensuring productivity and efficiency.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance, minor repairs, calibrations, and verifications of analytical equipment.
  • Assist in the development and documentation of test methods for product/material characterization.
  • Support troubleshooting and problem-solving activities related to materials and processes.
  • Communicate experimental details clearly, both verbally and in writing, to the R&D analytical lab manager and other team members.
  • Generate technical reports summarizing work performed and results obtained.
  • Keep the work area clean and organized.
  • Collaborate with R&D, quality control, production, technology, shipping, sales and marketing, customers, and equipment vendors as needed.
  • Use personal protective equipment as required, operate safely, and report unsafe conditions to the R&D analytical lab manager. Participate in the development, review, and documentation of safety procedures and engage in safety activities.
  • Accurately document observations during experiments and maintain a laboratory notebook as a legal record of R&D activities.
  • Assist with trials on experimental, pilot scale, or production equipment to evaluate new materials, product designs, and process modifications as directed.
  • Conduct specialized testing on materials and products as needed and assist in developing new test methods for product/material characterization.
  • Propose improvements for safety, processes, materials, and testing.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; a two-year Associate Degree in materials science, precision machining, or a related field is preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in a manufacturing or laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel; experience with MTS or Instron software is preferred.
  • Forklift operation capability is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently required to sit and use hands for handling and feeling.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently bend, lift, and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Intermediate algebra skills.
