Incumbent serves as Master Equipment Operator for the Department of Sanitation.

Duties

Primary
Drives sanitation equipment and various department vehicles on assigned routes, daily.

Regularly checks department trucks to ensure proper fluid levels and mechanical functions.

Performs regular maintenance such as washing and greasing.

Assists with emptying trash cans and loading trash bags, as needed.

Collects trash barrels from designated sites, paints and returns to site.

Delivers yard waste bags and recycling containers, as needed.

Pick up trash from all city facilities.

Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment.

Performs related duties as assigned. Job Requirements

Graduation from high school; or equivalent (GED); or combination of education and experience that give the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle. Ability to obtain a Class B with airbrake CDL within the first six months of employment, required.

Familiarity with city ordinances pertaining to refuse collection.

Knowledge of and ability to operate trucks and related equipment. Basic knowledge of mechanics and ability to perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs of light and heavy equipment.

Knowledge of all applicable safety precautions, and ability to apply such knowledge to daily operations, and/or working in traffic.

Difficulty of Work and Personal Work Relationship Difficulty of Work

Performs a majority of duties out of doors, in varying weather conditions, including temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees, and is periodically exposed to excessive noise, dirt, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes. Safety precautions must be used at all times to avoid injury to self and others.

Reports directly to Director of Sanitation.

Personal Work Relationships
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including co-workers, City and other government officials, community groups, and the general public. Responsible for the safe and effective operation of assigned vehicles and equipment under moderate supervision of department superiors. Specialized instructions and clarification are given in regard to unusual or difficult assignments, with majority of work reviewed in process and upon completion to ensure proper work sequences and adherence to instructions.
