The Autonomous Maintenance Operator Forklift Battery Exchange Station is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the forklift battery changing and charging area within a manufacturing facility. This role supports warehouse and material handling operations by performing forklift battery exchanges, monitoring charging equipment, inspecting batteries and exchange systems, and maintaining safe battery room operations.
The position is responsible for identifying equipment abnormalities, performing routine autonomous maintenance tasks, and communicating equipment or safety concerns to warehouse leadership and maintenance teams. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong attention to safety, equipment care, operational efficiency, and teamwork in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Safely operate forklift battery exchange equipment and charging systems
- Perform forklift battery changes and exchanges according to company procedures and safety standards
- Support warehouse operations by ensuring batteries are available, charged, and properly rotated to minimize forklift downtime
- Monitor battery charging cycles and ensure batteries are properly connected, charged, and maintained
- Conduct routine inspections of:
- Forklift batteries
- Chargers
- Battery transfer equipment
- Hoists and conveyors
- Safety equipment and eyewash stations
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions, damaged batteries, leaks, or unsafe conditions to warehouse leadership and maintenance personnel
- Perform basic autonomous maintenance activities including:
- Cleaning equipment and battery room areas
- Lubricating designated components
- Inspecting cables, connectors, rollers, and battery handling systems
- Completing operator care inspections
- Support preventative maintenance activities by assisting maintenance technicians as needed
- Maintain proper battery inventory and battery rotation practices
- Ensure battery room cleanliness and organization in accordance with 5S and facility standards
- Respond to operational issues quickly to minimize downtime for forklift and warehouse operations
- Follow all company safety procedures including:
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
- Battery handling procedures
- Acid spill response
- PPE requirements
- Safe lifting and material handling practices
- Safely handle industrial batteries and related equipment in compliance with OSHA and facility standards
- Complete required operational logs, inspection checklists, and maintenance documentation
- Utilize SAP or CMMS systems to document inspections, battery issues, and maintenance requests
- Communicate effectively with forklift operators, warehouse personnel, maintenance teams, and warehouse leadership regarding equipment status and operational concerns
- Participate in continuous improvement and safety initiatives within warehouse operations and the battery exchange area
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues associated with battery exchange, charging, transfer, support equipment, and other warehouse equipment as needed.
- Propose solutions and corrective actions for recurring equipment issues to warehouse leadership and maintenance personnel
- Assist in repairing battery exchange equipment, chargers, conveyors, fixtures, and supporting systems
- Modify, diagnose, lubricate, and operate equipment in accordance with company SOPs and safety standards
- Work independently and collaboratively with team members to complete maintenance and reliability activities
- Support equipment startup, operational readiness checks, and post-maintenance verification activities
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation related to equipment reliability and completed work
- Experience working in a warehouse, manufacturing, or industrial environment preferred
- Ability to safely operate material handling or industrial equipment
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to identify equipment abnormalities
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety procedures
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Outlook and maintenance or inventory systems
- Ability to follow written procedures and complete inspection documentation
- Ability to identify root causes of equipment issues and recommend long-term corrective actions
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems preferred
- Ability to use SAP or similar CMMS systems for maintenance documentation and work tracking
- Experience operating forklift battery exchange or charging systems
- Forklift certification or ability to become certified
- Familiarity with industrial battery charging equipment
- Experience with SAP or CMMS systems
- Knowledge of basic preventative maintenance practices
- Experience working with automated battery exchange systems preferred
- Warehouse and manufacturing environment with exposure to forklifts, moving equipment, and industrial machinery
- Frequent work around industrial batteries, charging systems, and electrical equipment
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work on concrete floors for extended periods
- Ability to lift, push, and pull equipment components as required
- Ability to wear required PPE including gloves, face shields, aprons, and safety footwear
- Exposure to battery charging environments and occasional battery acid handling procedures
- Must be able to work safely around powered industrial vehicles and battery handling equipment
