Milling Operator (Ground) - Role Overview
The Milling Operator (Ground) is a vital member of an asphalt milling crew, working closely with the machine operator to ensure safe, smooth, and efficient milling operations. Often referred to as a ground man or milling ground crew member, this role supports daily field activities and helps maintain jobsite productivity and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate Truck Movements
Safely guide trucks into position for loading and unloading, including directing backing, positioning, dumping, and exiting the work area.
- Support the Machine Operator
Act as the operator's eyes and ears by monitoring the conveyor, milling path, and surrounding environment to ensure safe operation.
- Maintain Work Area Cleanliness
Remove debris from the milling drum and cutter housing to prevent uneven cuts, equipment damage, or downtime.
- Protect Equipment
Identify and signal potential hazards such as manholes, valve boxes, steel plates, or concrete patches to prevent damage to the milling machine.
- Assist with Grade Control
Help ensure proper milling depth and alignment, depending on equipment type and job requirements.
- Follow Safety Procedures
Promote and enforce strict adherence to safety standards, maintaining a hazard-free work environment for all crew members.
