Purchasing Manager Requirements & Qualifications

  • Degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in purchasing metals and strategic sourcing.
  • 5+ years of experience working with MS Excel or equivalent tools.
  • Knowledge of nonferrous metals and aluminum.
  • Strong understanding of raw material analysis and tracking systems.
  • Expertise in corporate purchasing practices and negotiation strategies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Purchasing Manager Preferred Background & Skills

  • MBA or advanced degree.
  • Experience building supplier relationships domestically and internationally.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing or industrial environments.

Purchasing Manager Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Source and purchase scrap metal materials, negotiating specifications and payment terms.
  • Protect and expand profit margins while meeting volume and margin goals.
  • Consult with domestic and international customers and internal teams on scrap grading and quality.
  • Travel to client sites to identify opportunities and strengthen business relationships.
  • Analyze local and international raw material markets for trends and supply opportunities.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, supply chain, and other internal teams to ensure material availability and procurement efficiency.
  • Monitor procurement processes to ensure compliance with internal controls and contract approval workflows.
  • Develop budgets, rolling forecasts, and target savings.
  • Maintain and enhance productive supplier relationships while continually identifying new sourcing partners.
