Machine Operator - 5-Axis Lathe Job Description This role focuses on operating advanced 5-axis lathes and related metal-cutting equipment to produce high-quality components that meet precise specifications. You will work hands-on with modern machine tools, make minor G-code adjustments, and ensure consistent part quality for metal components used by a variety of end customers. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys production-focused work, prefers running machines rather than full programming or complex setups, and likes solving small mechanical or code-related issues. Responsibilities Operate 5-axis lathes to cut and process metal components according to detailed specifications and quality standards. Interpret and adjust G-code programs to fine-tune sensor behavior and optimize machine performance during production runs. Perform routine machine checks, including inspecting equipment, verifying settings, and confirming proper tooling before and during operation. Complete tool changes and basic mechanical adjustments to maintain accurate and efficient machine operation. Monitor production runs to maintain accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency, making minor corrections as needed. Use measuring tools and read blueprints and technical drawings to verify dimensions and ensure parts meet required tolerances. Perform basic troubleshooting on mechanical and code-related issues to minimize downtime and maintain workflow. Operate additional shop equipment such as drill presses, bandsaws, deburring tools, and other metalworking machinery as needed. Follow all established safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment at all times. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper handling and storage of tools and materials. Read and interpret work orders and work instructions to plan and execute daily tasks effectively. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production goals and support smooth operations across the facility. Demonstrate consistent attention to detail in all aspects of machine operation, quality checks, and documentation. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent. A couple of years of experience working with G-code, including the ability to make small edits for sensor or program adjustments. A couple of years of experience operating a 5-axis lathe, preferably on equipment similar to modern machine tool systems. Experience operating metal cutting saws or similar metalworking equipment (preferred). Ability to read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and technical drawings. Proficiency using measuring tools to verify part dimensions and tolerances. Basic math skills to perform measurements, conversions, and simple calculations. Basic computer skills to interact with machine interfaces and production systems. Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand machine behavior and make minor mechanical adjustments. Strong attention to detail to ensure consistent part quality and adherence to specifications. Commitment to safe work practices and consistent use of required PPE. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively as part of a team. Physical ability to perform tasks associated with medium work, including standing, lifting, and handling metal materials throughout the shift. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with metal materials in a production or fabrication environment. Familiarity with operating or working around drill presses, bandsaws, deburring tools, and other shop equipment. Exposure to mechanical, laser, or other industrial machinery in a manufacturing or warehouse setting. Ability to interpret and follow detailed work instructions and production documentation. Comfort working in a fast-paced, production-focused environment with loud equipment and frequent material handling. Interest in continuous learning related to machining, G-code optimization, and equipment performance. Why Work Here? You will join a stable, well-structured operation that offers comprehensive benefits and supports long-term financial and personal well-being. The organization provides medical, dental, and vision coverage with affordable employee contributions, along with a 401(k) plan that includes a company match up to 4%. Work Environment The role is based in a non-climate-controlled metal and steel warehouse environment where metal is cut and prepared for shipment to customers. You will work around loud equipment, including band saws and new lathe machines, with frequent noise from metal being transported and cut. Personal protective equipment is required at all times, including steel-toed metatarsal boots, safety vests or long-sleeve safeguards, and a safety hard hat, which is provided. The facility focuses on cutting and processing metal rather than manufacturing it from raw materials, so much of the work involves handling, measuring, and cutting stock prior to shipment.
