JOB SUMMARY

Performs highly complex work in the production and processing of various products in the Texas

Correctional Industry department. Work involves monitoring the work of inmates to ensure efficient

operations. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and

independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

A. Monitors inmates in the performance of assigned tasks; develops production standards; makes

recommendations on production procedure changes; monitors and reviews production to ensure

quality and quantity control of finished products; and monitors machinery and equipment

maintenance.

B. Ensures on-the-job training and safety training are conducted for inmate workers in methods

and equipment used.

C. Prepares reports of operations and related documents.

D. Maintains security of tools, machinery, and equipment; responds to emergency situations;

performs various correctional and custodial support functions; and assists in maintaining

security of assigned inmates.

  • Performs a variety of marginal duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education, Experience, and Training

  1. Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.

  2. One year full-time, wage-earning experience in garment manufacturing

or

Two years full-time, wage-earning experience in any production or manufacturing operation.

Thirty semester hours from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by

the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of

Education (USDE) may be substituted for each year of experience on a year-for-year basis for

a maximum substitution of two years.

  1. Correctional custody or law enforcement experience preferred.

B. Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of quality control standards to maintain satisfactory levels of production.

  2. Knowledge of production and workflow procedures.

  3. Knowledge of agency and departmental organizational structure, policies, procedures,

rules, and regulations preferred.

  1. Knowledge of garment manufacturing preferred.

  2. Skill to communicate ideas and instructions clearly and concisely.

  3. Skill to coordinate with other staff, departments, officials, agencies, organizations, and the

public.

  1. Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  2. Skill in problem-solving techniques.

  3. Skill to train and supervise the work of inmates.

  4. Skill in the use of machinery and equipment in the assigned area preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS WITH OR WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION

A. Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach above the shoulder, grasp, pull, bend

repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak,

analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 15-44 lbs., perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle, and

operate motor equipment.

B. Conditions include working inside, working around machines with moving parts and moving

objects, radiant and electrical energy, working closely with others, working alone, working

protracted or irregular hours, excessive or intermittent noise, constant noise, dust, fumes,

smoke, gases, grease, oils, solvents, and traveling by car, van, bus, and airplane.

C. Equipment (machines, tools, devices) used in performing only the essential functions include

computer and related equipment, calculator, copier, fax machine, garment manufacturing

machines and equipment, hand tools, forklift, pallet jack, telephone, dolly, and automobile.
