Lathe CNC Machinist Job Description The Lathe CNC Machinist sets up and operates manual and CNC lathe machines to produce precision components according to detailed job specifications. This role reads and interprets blueprints, performs accurate measurements and inprocess inspections, and adjusts tooling and machine settings to maintain tight tolerances and high product quality. The machinist documents production results, follows established safety and quality procedures, and works independently on the night shift with minimal supervision in a busy production environment. Responsibilities Set up and operate manual and CNC lathe machines according to job specifications and work instructions. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions to determine machining requirements, dimensions, and tolerances. Measure parts using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools to verify conformance to specifications. Perform inprocess inspections throughout the machining cycle to ensure parts consistently meet tolerance requirements. Adjust tooling, offsets, speeds, and feeds as needed to maintain part quality, dimensional accuracy, and efficient production. Load and unload raw materials and finished parts safely and efficiently from machines and workstations. Perform routine machine maintenance, including cleaning, basic adjustments, and checks to keep equipment in proper working condition. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards and housekeeping expectations. Follow all safety procedures, shop rules, and quality standards throughout the machining process. Document production results accurately and completely, including counts, measurements, and any deviations from specifications. Report production, quality, or equipment issues promptly to supervision for resolution. Work independently during the night shift with minimal supervision while meeting production goals and quality requirements. Use CNC controls, including smooth controls and G & M codes, to set up and run 3-, 4-, and 5-axis machining operations as required. Essential Skills 1-3+ years of experience operating lathe machines in a manufacturing environment. Proficiency in setting up and operating manual and CNC lathe machines. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions, including understanding tolerances. Hands-on experience using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges. Familiarity with CNC controls, including smooth controls, and the ability to work with G & M codes. Experience with 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machining operations. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work. Ability to perform inprocess inspections and make necessary adjustments to maintain tolerances. Physical ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs as part of daily duties. Willingness and reliability to work night shift and overtime as required. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in a production machine shop environment. Comfort working with various CNC control systems, including Okuma and similar platforms. Experience performing routine preventive maintenance on CNC and manual lathe machines. Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot quality or machining issues and adjust processes accordingly. Good documentation skills for recording production results and inspection data. Effective communication skills to report issues and collaborate with supervision and team members. Why Work Here? Safety is a priority, and steel-toed shoes are required in the machine shop. The dress code consists of jeans and a t-shirt at all times, suitable for a production and machining environment.
