SMT & Reflow Equipment Maintenance Engineer
Location: Oakdale, MN
Salary: $61,000 to $91,000 (DOE)
Schedule: 2nd Shift (12:00 PM 9:00 PM)
Training Schedule: Day Shift (6:00 AM 2:30 PM)
We are seeking a hands-on Maintenance Engineer with strong expertise in repairing and maintaining Surface Mount Technology (SMT) equipment and Reflow ovens in a fast-paced electronics manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will have experience troubleshooting complex machinery, working with PLCs, and ensuring peak equipment performance to support continuous production.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Repair & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and repair SMT machines, reflow ovens, screen printers, conveyors, pick-and-place systems, and other electronics manufacturing equipment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, actuators, and motion control systems.
- Respond quickly to machine failures, ensuring efficient repairs and minimizing production downtime.
- Maintain detailed repair and diagnostic records.
Preventive & Scheduled Maintenance
- Develop and execute preventive maintenance plans for SMT lines and reflow ovens.
- Calibrate and test equipment functionality, including PLC-controlled systems, to maintain performance and quality standards.
- Maintain a spare parts inventory and ensure critical components are readily available.
Process & Technical Support
- Partner with Process Engineers to identify and correct equipment-based process issues.
- Support installations and upgrades of PLC-controlled equipment and assist in validation processes.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives targeting uptime, throughput, and equipment efficiency.
Documentation & Reporting
- Record maintenance activities, technical issues, and system modifications in ERP or CMMS.
- Provide regular updates and performance reports to Engineering and Production leadership.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Engineering, Electronics, or related field; or 5+ years of relevant experience in an electronics manufacturing maintenance role.
- In-depth knowledge of PLCs, including troubleshooting, programming basics, and working with control systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
- Hands-on experience maintaining and repairing SMT equipment (e.g., Fuji, Yamaha, Juki) and reflow ovens (e.g., Heller, BTU, Vitronics).
- Familiarity with IPC-610, SMEMA standards, and ISO procedures.
- Proficient in CAD, SPC, and Microsoft Office; experience with ERP systems (4th Shift preferred).
- Strong ability to read schematics, technical manuals, and interpret machine diagnostics.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work across engineering, production, and quality teams.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Requires standing, walking, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Work is performed on the production floor near machinery and electronic equipment.
- Exposure to moderate noise and airborne particles may occur.
