Position Summary: The Master Craftsman
Methods & Mentorship Leader plays a pivotal role in preserving, systematizing, and transferring high-level woodworking expertise within the organization. As the bridge between decades of hands-on experience and the next generation of skilled workers, this position ensures knowledge is not lost, but transformed into scalable, teachable methods that uphold the company's commitment to precision, quality, and craftsmanship.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Standardization & Knowledge Capture
- Document legacy construction practices, including tools, jigs, sequences, tolerances, and finishing techniques.
- Convert undocumented methods into formal SOPs and visual standards.
- Work with Engineering to align build methodologies with design intent and optimize manufacturability.
- Work to develop, document, and train in correct repair techniques and skills
2. Apprentice Training & Development
Create and lead structured onboarding and skills training for new craftsmen and apprentices.
Help develop modular learning materials, including training cards, videos, and job aids.
Define and track skill progressions through a formalized craftsmanship ladder and mentorship program.
3. Craftsmanship Mentorship & Coaching
Serve as on-floor mentor and coach during live production, guiding team members in proper technique.
Provide real-time correction, performance feedback, and encouragement for developing craftsmen.
Host weekly hands-on workshops focused on precision, joinery, and finish quality.
4. Process Improvement & Cultural Stewardship
Lead small-group kaizen events aimed at improving product flow, minimizing rework, and enhancing build quality.
Establish a "Pride in the Craft" culture that celebrates craftsmanship excellence.
Archive legacy knowledge using digital tools (video, photo, and text).
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
25+ years of high-level woodworking experience
Ability to work among peers, engineers, and production staff
Skilled communicator, mentor, and teacher
Ability to document and translate intuitive methods into structured systems
