Summary

You will serve as an Industrial Hygienist in the Industrial Hygiene Office of NAVAL HOSPITAL HEALTH CLINIC LEMOORE at Naval Branch Health Clinic Fallon Nevada. Responsible for conducting industrial hygiene surveys and other functions on a scheduled or emergency basis to evaluate a wide variety of occupational health hazards which encompass a broad spectrum of work activities. Plans and carries out a comprehensive IH Program for the Medical Facility, NAS Fallon, all squadrons, Tenant Commands, and Hawthorne, Nevada.

Responsibilities

  • You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations.
  • You will choose appropriate sampling procedures and prepare necessary equipment and sampling media to fulfill survey strategy needed in monitoring airborne chemical, physical, and biological agents.
  • You will investigate health problems that arise among workers.
  • You will conduct indoor environmental quality surveys or assessments of individuals experiencing occupational exposure.
  • You will plan, direct or conduct detailed surveys and investigations related to the recognition, evaluation and control of industrial health hazards for specific programs.
  • You will prepare written reports of survey findings based on observations, interviews, and laboratory analysis of samples.
  • You will enter shop, SEG, and sampling data into the DOD approved web-based database, DOEHRS-IH, including report completion dates and SEG assessments.

  • During industrial hygiene inspections, survey, and evaluations the employee is exposed to an extensive variety of hazardous environments. These include both physical and chemical agents. The use of protective clothing and equipment is required.
  • Inspections require moderate physical exertion, including walking, standing and carrying many items of equipment used in sampling.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of professional Industrial Hygienist experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: conducting industrial hygiene inspections of workplace environments to assess work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers, conduct professionally written industrial hygiene surveys; evaluate physical and chemical hazards such as noise, explosives, ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation, ventilation, pesticides within a workplace environment; utilize and calibrate industrial hygiene measurement equipment such as indoor air quality meters, infrared analyzers, and moisture meters to evaluate environment stresses; perform industrial hygiene inspections; provide professionally written industrial hygiene reports with recommendations to eliminate or reduce chemical and physical stressors within work environments.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

  • A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science that was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable); OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The degree was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable); OR
  • A Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

EVALUATION OF EDUCATION

All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.
