CNC Machinist

Employed in manufacturing facilities, CNC Machinists are responsible for operating computer numerated control machines.  These high tech machines are run by customized computer programs, and utilized for producing large or small batches of machine parts, dies, and tools.  While some CNC operator positions require candidates to simply press a button, the majority of machining careers are more intensive.  Professionals must be able to complete numerous activities associated with overall product production, and are often required to conduct programming responsibilities as well.  Operators begin with a large block of glass, metal, or plastic, and use the equipment to cut, bore, or alter the work piece into the desired shape and size.  Machinists are required to work from drafts, sketches, or blueprints in order to determine the correct calculations for product specifics, the necessary speed for the piece to enter the machine, the amount of material to be removed from the piece, and the tools or procedures required for completing the object.  Once this information has been gathered, it must be translated into a numeric code that may be entered into the machine so processing can begin.  Professionals must be accustomed to all aspects of the machine, as well as monitor all vibrations and noises to ensure peak machine performance.

Job requirements and specific duties vary by shop, so there are a number of ways to enter these occupations.  Professionals interested in the more basic cnc operation jobs may enter these positions with a high school diploma or GED, and generally undergo a few weeks of training.  Others may begin as floor help, or in other general labor jobs, and gradually gain enough experience that they will gain employment as a machinist.  For operation or programming positions, apprenticeships, vocational, secondary, or post secondary programs are available, but there is often the ability for a candidate to gain immediate entrance to these occupations.  Certification is also available to candidates who complete accredited formal programs, and pass performance and written examination requirements.  Commonly, candidates should possess basic computer knowledge, be capable of working independently, and be highly accurate when applying for a CNC machinist position.

While the majority of CNC professionals are found on the production floor, modern machines are often enclosed and decrease noise or debris that professionals come into contact with.  Programmers often work directly off the shop floor in a separate area which is close enough for them to easily assist with calculations and other necessities.  Advancements are continually being made to increase worker safety, but it is still necessary for associates to utilize protective eye and ear wear, gloves, and/or shields when on the shop floor.

Due to technological advances, CNC industries are projecting a decline in the number of professionals necessary to meet the growing demands for these products.  In spite of this trend, there will be favorable opportunities for professionals in these occupations.  Employers are currently finding it difficult to locate candidates to fill these positions, and in response to the number of associates entering training programs, shortages are expected to remain through 2014.  Machinists will not be the only associates being replaced by technology and advancements on existing products, programmer jobs are increasingly automated which will decrease the need for those positions as well.
